Ceremony organized to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Argentina


BUENOS AIRES, Argentina: A joint reception was held at the historic San Martin Palace in Buenos Aires to mark 70 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Argentina.

The ceremony was jointly led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, HE Ambassador Pablo Tettamanti and Ambassador of Pakistan, HE Dr Muhammad Khalid Ejaz.

Welcoming the guests, Ambassador Dr Ejaz mentioned that a similar event was held in Islamabad where Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi planted seven trees in the Argentine park.

The ambassador said that bilateral relations between Pakistan and Argentina were on an upward trajectory. Recently held bilateral political consultations and joint committee meetings would deepen bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, agriculture, forestry and pharmaceuticals.

The ambassador said the two countries have a common passion for hockey, mountaineering and polo. Pakistan winning the 1978 World Cup of Hockey at Campo de Polo in Buenos Aires was a historic moment. Argentinian mountaineers have climbed K2, the second highest peak in the world, several times. This year, a ceremonial polo match is being organized in Lahore where Pakistani and Argentinian players will compete.

Ambassador Dr Khalid Ejaz mentioned that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s policies have borne fruit as Pakistan’s economy grew 3.94% in 2020-2021 despite pandemic conditions. He mentioned that Pakistan’s liberal trade regime and a large consumer market provide solid economic opportunities for Argentine businesses. He explained that Pakistan produced high quality textiles, sporting goods and surgical instruments which could find a good market in Argentina. Dr Ejaz expressed Pakistan’s commitment to develop a broad and multifaceted partnership with Argentina.

The Ambassador stressed that Pakistan focuses on the imperatives of geoeconomy and pursues policies aimed at promoting peace, development, partnerships and regional connectivity. Pakistan and Argentina shared a world view and common views on issues of global importance. The two countries believe that a multilateral order with the United Nations at its heart remains essential to address a myriad of complex and interconnected challenges facing the international community.

The Ambassador mentioned that the international community has a key role to play in avoiding risks to peace and stability in South Asia and facilitating a just and lasting solution to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with Council resolutions. security and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. . He welcomed Argentina by joining the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in 2021.

Emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to tackle climate change, Dr Ejaz mentioned Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Ten Billion Tree program which had gained international fame and hoped for increased collaboration between Pakistan and Argentina in afforestation and other similar projects.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Argentine Republic, HE Ambassador Pablo Tettamanti, highlighted the progress made in recent years to strengthen bilateral relations, promote trade and investment and identify new collaborative projects in the fields forestry, agriculture and technology. Referring to the common vision of the two countries, he expressed the will to further strengthen the ties and diversify them.

Ambassador Khalid Ejaz presented special souvenirs to the Deputy Foreign Minister specially designed for the occasion.

A video with commentary in Spanish on Pakistan’s culture, tourism, textile, manufacturing and IT sectors was also released, which captivated audiences.

The reception brought together ambassadors, senior government officials and individuals from civil society, media, think tanks and businesses.

The dignitaries feasted on traditional Pakistani cuisine.
