Tourism development in neighboring areas is stimulated by sports tourism

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Happy Harinto, director of strategic communications for the Mandalika Grand Prix Association, said sporting events in one region can boost the development of surrounding tourist areas, including the Mandalika Circuit, in West Nusa Tenggara.

The circuit will host the World Superbike series from November 12 to 14, 2021 and MotoGP from February 11 to 13, 2022.

Harinto stressed that his team are working tirelessly to prepare the circuit to host the prestigious motorcycle racing event. The facilities and infrastructure are still being prepared to support the event, including the construction of a five-star hotel.

“Later, with MotoGP, it will definitely help develop (tourism around Mandalika),” he said.

Sporting events will have a positive impact on the development of tourism in the Mandalika region, including Bali.

“This has huge impacts on the tourism industry,” Harinto said.

Harinto cited the example of the Buriram circuit in Thailand, located 400 kilometers from Bangkok, which can attract motorcycle enthusiasts and tourists alike to visit the region.

Harinto is optimistic that the Mandalika Tour would also attract more tourists. Although construction of housing, especially hotels, in Mandalika is far from complete, it is optimistic that this motorcycle racing event continues to attract enthusiasts.

“They could make it to Mandalika. Accommodation is not a big deal. They can camp or choose a host family to live in, while the others watch the race or explore the Mandalika area,” Harinto explained. .

The Mandalika Grand Prix Association (MGPA) expects the government to immediately issue regulations on allowing spectators to attend World Superbike and MotoGP events at the Mandalika Circuit in West Nusa Tenggara.

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), sports tourism is one of the fastest growing forms of tourism. In Indonesia, this form of tourism is growing by 6% per year, with a value of 600 billion US dollars, or contributes 25% of the total revenues of the national travel and tourism industry, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism. and the Creative Economy.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno encouraged Indonesian youth to develop sports tourism activities based on local wisdom, so that not only the destination but also the local culture helps boost the economy and to create more jobs.

Last July, Uno pointed out that sports tourism is a new tourist trend that has a fairly large market. In Indonesia, growth could reach nearly 18.790 billion rupees until 2024.

The COVID-19 pandemic has played a role in changing tourism trends, with tourists more inclined to undertake small-scale tours to conduct outdoor activities, driven by increased tourist awareness of health, cleanliness, safety and environmental sustainability. (
